The Project

Cork Greenmap is a community mapping and sustainable development project. We aim to:

  • create and maintain a Green Map of Cork
  • raise awareness of sustainable living issues through mapping and other events
  • create and use tools to engage people in the enhancement of the social and environmental aspects of their communities
  • create globally applicable tools for the promotion of sustainable solutions

Community Mapping

Community mapping is a dynamic collaborative process in which local people, schools, businesses, community groups and individuals cooperate to produce a map of sites and services important to them in their area.

It facilitates networking and promotion of locally available resources both for locals and visitors, and it encourages people to look at their area in new ways.

The International Green Map System

Cork Greenmap is a member of the Green Map System which provides guidelines for the creation of maps to sustainable living and community resources in diverse areas, each tailored to promote local ecological, cultural and community needs, while still reflecting local character.

This not-for-profit movement was set up in 1991 by Wendy Brawer while organising activities in New-York, USA, for the Earth Summit. Brawer created a map to highlight ecological sites, human resources and activities to make the city more accessible to foreign delegates.

Today there are over 130 Green Maps globally, including Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Belfast and Cork.
